What is Progressive Snapshot?

Progressive’s Snapshot program personalizes your car insurance rate on your actual driving. Known as usage-based insurance, the program allows consumers to pay based on how and how much they drive instead of just traditional factors. In most states, users of Snapshot get an automatic discount just for participating and then a personalized rate is given at renewal based on results. While rates can increase with high-risk driving, most drivers save money with Snapshot.

How does Progressive Snapshot work?

Progressive Snapshot works by providing drivers the opportunity to save money based on their driving habits. Users can participate in Snapshot one of two ways:

1. Progressive Snapshot App

Dashboard – The main view of your app. From here you can access your driving status, most recent trips and ways to improve your driving.

Trip Log – The trip log shows all of your trips. The app can only count trips when you’re the driver, so there’s an option to recategorize if needed.

Trip Details – The trip details show more information about a specific trip, including a map highlighting where you had a hard brake, fast acceleration or used your phone.

Driving Tips – Here you can receive tips based on your current driving to potentially boost your score and possible discount.

2. Progressive Snapshot Device

Easy to Plug In – The device plugs right into your car’s OBD-II port, which is typically under your steering wheel.

Overview – To see all your Snapshot info (such as trip logs, driving tips, progress, etc.), simply log in to your account on progressive.com or use the Progressive app.

Beeps for Hard Breaks – Every time you have a hard brake, the plug-in device will beep so you know how you’re doing. Fewer beeps could get you a bigger discount.

How much could you save with Progressive Snapshot?

The average discount at program sign up is $26.2 This one-time discount is credited on your very first policy period (before you start your Snapshot program) and expires when you renew. Then, you receive a rate based on your actual driving.

The average discount at program completion is $145.3 This discount is credited when the program is completed and you renew your auto insurance policy with Progressive (usually after about six months). Customers who renewed their policy, and earned a Snapshot discount, saved an average of $145.3

Rates may increase with high-risk driving, but only about 2 out of 10 drivers actually receive an increase.

Progressive Snapshot FAQs

What is Snapshot?

Snapshot prices insurance by personalizing rates based on actual driving (also known as usage-based insurance).

How do I enroll in Snapshot?

Progressive customers can enroll in Snapshot at the time of policy purchase.

How can Snapshot affect my car insurance rate?

Snapshot measures a variety of factors related to your driving, including the time of day you drive, sudden changes in speed (hard brakes and rapid accelerations), the amount you drive, and, for customers using the mobile app in some states, how you are using your mobile phone while driving.

Most Snapshot customers earn a discount based on their safe driving; however, riskier driving based on these factors could result in a higher rate at renewal, depending on the state you live in and when you signed up for the program.
