Auto Insurance Overview
Having car insurance is a smart way to protect one of your most expensive assets and it’s often required, depending on where you live. When an accident occurs, auto insurance can protect you from any financial burdens should you be responsible for covering repairs, damage, medical bills, lost wages, legal fees and more.
Choosing the right car insurance can be a complex process and one size does not fit all. We save customers an average of $693 per year on auto and home insurance. We can help you compare coverage and rates in just minutes, finding the most affordable plan available to protect you, your car and those who travel with you.
What does car insurance cover?
There are different types of insurance to protect you and your vehicle in the event of an accident.
Six Basic Types of Car Insurance
1. Bodily Injury Liability – If you are at fault in an auto accident, your insurance provider will cover medical, rehabilitation and funeral expenses sustained by all injured passengers, including those not in your car. This plan will also pay your legal and settlement fees if a lawsuit occurs as the result of an accident that you caused.
2. Property Damage Liability – Like bodily injury liability, this type of coverage kicks in when you’re at fault for a car accident. Property damage liability covers parts and labor for car repairs, property inside the other party’s vehicle, and any items you may have hit. While this plan will also pay certain legal expenses, it does not cover damages to your own vehicle or property.
3. Personal Injury Protection (PIP or No-Fault) – Regardless of who is at fault in an auto accident, PIP covers most medical expenses—including hospital, rehabilitation and in-home assistance costs—along with lost wages and funeral expenses incurred by you and your passengers. Certain states require personal injury protection in addition to other types of coverage.
4. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection – If you are hit by a driver with either no or inadequate coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection pays for the medical expenses, rehabilitation and funeral costs incurred by you and any other passengers in your vehicle. It also pays for the settlement of any lawsuits caused by an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run driver. Some states require this type of coverage, others consider it optional.
5. Collision – If you are at fault in a car accident, collision coverage pays for any damages to your vehicle, up to and including your vehicle’s cost.
6. Comprehensive – Oftentimes, people ask, “what does comprehensive car insurance cover?”. Simply put, a comprehensive plan covers damage to your car from an event that’s out of your control, such as a natural disaster, theft, vandalism, or other unpredictable events.
What is full coverage auto insurance?
Full coverage auto insurance isn’t necessarily a specific type of policy, but instead, a combination of coverage. Full coverage often includes collision, comprehensive and liability insurance.
Choosing coverage that’s right for you can be time consuming and complex, but we make it quick and easy. We can help you understand everything that is (or isn’t) included in your options and decide what coverage is best for both your needs and your budget.
